New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, a Democratic presidential candidate, is leading a delegation to North Korea to seek information on the 8,000 MIA Americans from the war with Korea of the early 1950's.
Apparently nuclear or other negotiations are not on the table for this visit, and it is wholly devoted to finding information on this large number of unaccounted for Americans who were either lost but unaccounted for during combat, or else taken prisoner by the North Koreans or Chinese and never accounted for. Only a very small number of U.S. soldiers ever defected to North Korea during the war, and their lives became a hellish existence of house arrest and forced Communist indoctrination lessons. Most MIA soldiers might have been taken prisoner by the Communist forces, and could have disappeared because the North Korean regime or the Chinese either starved, tortured or executed the American MIAs.
